Consider what you have available to work with, how much space, time and experience.  Flowers are more low maintenance, veggies are fun to eat but more work.  Just starting, consider large containers and bedding plants form a nursery.  For the more adventurous start your own seeds indoors.  Plan activities for immediate and delayed gratification.  Marigold transplants provide instant color and sunflower seeds planted in the spring will amaze children all summer long.  Consider a 3 year plan towards what you would like to create.  Raised beds are for most situations one of the best options.

Note About Flowers:

Annuals:  Flower for a long time but only live one year.

Perennial:  Come back year after year.  Need winter protection if in containers.

Project Ideas:

	Pizza Herb Garden, create a meter circle garden, divide into slices and plant oregano, sage, thyme, basil and rosemary.
	Salsa Garden, plant tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, (I love corn too)
	Bean/Pea tepee, on the ground or in a large container, create a “tepee” with bamboo poles or long sticks.  Plant climber beans or peas, play and eat!
	Sunflower House, plant sunflowers in a circle or square, watch for bees.
	3 Sisters Garden,  interplant corn with runner beans and squash on the ground.  Iroquois Indian staple garden plan.
	Strawberries in a Pot,  ever bearing strawberries in any container or strawberry pot.  Needs winter protection.
	Potatoes in a Pot, 12”, 30cm pot, one potato and harvest in the fall.  Great individual project.
	Pumpkin Patch, if you have some space pumpkins are low maintenance and fun to watch.
	Cut Flower Garden, try planting a patch just for cutting, kids could take home a bouquet 1x week!  Try tulips, sweet Williams, zinnias, purple cone flowers ect.
	Butterfly Garden, butterfly weed, cosmos, black-eyed susan, sedum, bee balm ECT.
	Everlasting Garden, statice, strawflower, yarrow, baby’s breath ECT.
	Rock Garden, rocks a little soil and plant, hens and checks, sedums, saxifrage, grape hyacinth, thyme ect.
	Toad House, take a pot, turn it upside-down, make a doorway and place in a coolish area of the gardens.
	Scent Garden, for a sensory treat try planting lemon balm, lavender, chives, chocolate and orange mint, peony, tulips ect.
	Tomato Patch, easy to grow in a large container or on the ground.   Choose determinate plants (they only grow so large), cherry tomatoes are a favorite.
